Well, I stayed up last night to call Symantec customer service during the night like I was told. Even though it was midnight, I still had to wait on hold for half an hour to speak to someone in tech support.
The technician had a hard time understanding me and was not able to find my contract information even though I had the account number and customer number from when I purchased my Norton Anti-virus software download online. He acted like I must not have really purchased it and even wanted to know the number of the credit card I used.
Needless to say, I could feel my anger rising, especially when he said that he would email me in the next half hour or so with directions and if they didn’t work, I could call again and ask for a refund or something.
I decided not to wait up for the email, which was a good idea since I have still not received anything and almost 24 hours have gone by.
I’ve never agreed with North American companies outsourcing their customer service to India since it takes away local jobs, and this incident just re-inforces how I feel.
If only I didn’t have to call yet again to get this thing straightened out!

I have spent most of my day trying to get through to Symantec about a problem with my Norton Anti-virus program. It no longer works, so I would like it fixed, especially since I paid to have it updated online. Next time I will buy my anti-virus from a computer store, so I have the physical product.
First it took over half an hour for me to even find a customer support phone number on their site. My other options were to pay for a tech support call or wait two days for an email answer - neither of which I wanted to do.
When I finally reached a live person on the phone, they transferred me to tech support, where the phone rang for almost half an hour before I finally hung up.
Next call, the support person assured me there would be no more ringing when he transferred me. True to his word, this time I listened to music while I was kept on hold. Another half hour later and I finally hung up again. By this time I was getting very angry.
Third call and a lady said she would get my file up right away - I don’t know if she did or not because the phone was disconnected.
Every time I called from then on, the line was busy. At about supper time, I finally got through again and was told my having to wait was because days are quite busy, but if I call between 11 pm and 6 am, my chances of getting technical support are much better.
It is now almost midnight and I am about to call one last time. I have also written myself a note in large print reminding me NEVER to buy anything from that company again.

Oh where, oh where can it be?
I thought there was time for a lot of things
Instead it has passed and left me.
I feel like Rip Van Winkle - one minute I had a whole month of time off stretching before me, and the next thing I know, there are only a few days left. I had so many plans and things to accomplish and it started off well - travelling and visiting family. Then the flu hit and the hours turned into days, all swallowed up by my sick bed. Still not much energy, but my new laptop lets me sit on the couch and type away. I feel robbed of all that time and opportunity, but at the same time, thankful that there is still time.
I guess partly because of the Tsunami and partly my turning 56 tomorrow, I’ve been in a very reflective mood - regretting all of my wasted time and realizing how much I need to redeem it wisely, since there is no guarantee of our tomorrows. How and with whom do I really want to spend whatever time I may have left?
So starting tomorrow, I want this new year of mine to be filled with the activities and the people that give purpose to my life, but first I have to decide what they are. I’ve got my sense of humour and a few brains in this old gray head that will help me out - along with some guidance from an awesome God who hasn’t let me down yet.
Look out 2005 - here I come!
